Jason Lewin - Week 2: The Annual Ski Trip
When I used to live in Los Angeles, we would drive down to Mammoth once a year for our annual Lewin family ski trip! It's a 6 hour drive and was something me and my brothers would look forward to all winter long. We had the same routine for every year; load up the car the night before, wakeup the next morning at 6am, and leave for the road at 7am. We would drive 4 hours and then stop at our favorite food place, Schat's Bakery in Bishop. Bishop is just over an hour from mammoth, depending on the weather conditions that year.
After that, then go to the Vons and buy our favorite sugary cereals, snacks, and bars for the week. We are typically a very healthy family, but when it came to this week in mammoth, our calorie intake would go through the roof. Then, once we would arrive at our hotel on the top of mammoth mountain, located right next to the main lodge, we would immediately unload our bags and go get fitted for skis, poles, and boots. It's exciting finding out every year our new size or the new type of skis we would have for the week. It would always be freezing the initial second we would step out of the car, into the snowy winter weather. I know you are probably all thinking, since when does it snow in California, but infant it snows in a few select places, consistently and multiple feet of snow a year.
Fun fact about me, I am a very advanced and avid skier but I have never been skiing outside of California. Now back to my ski trip, the most exhilarating run I've ever done on the mountain was Cornice Bowl. It's steep, icy, scary, and double black on the top of the mountain. The most terrifying thing is looking down on the entire mountain when you're about to drop into the run, but you feel the adrenaline and thrill rushing through your blood. The trail begins to get less steep and a bit easier the closer you get to the bottom. There are moguls and trees you have to maneuver through and control your skis very precisely, so you don't hurt yourself or have your skis pop off. Once you complete a run of this difficulty, it feels very accomplishing and you just want to do it again.
Have you ever been skiing before and if so, where?

I have never been skiing, mainly because I haven't even seen snow since I was three years old. However, I'd definitely love to go skiing when given the opportunity. You made it sound really fun and thrilling, which is something I'd love to experience.
