Jonas Slusher - Bron vs. Jordan. Who is the real G.O.A.T? - Week 2 9/12/23

There has been a long-running, constant debate over who the greatest basketball player of all time is. Lebron James is an amazing player, and he would be the best if It wasn’t for the existence of Michael Jordan. Although Lebron has been very impactful and influential in his 20+ year career, his achievements do not rival those of Jordan.

The most obvious thing that Michael Jordan has over Lebron James is their record in NBA Championships. Throughout his career, Jordan went 6-0 in his career in NBA Finals series. To compare, Lebron currently has a record of 4-6 in the NBA Finals. That comes down to a win percentage of 1.00 vs. a percentage of 0.40. In the biggest moment, on the largest stage in professional basketball, Lebron James simply has not succeeded in the same way as Michael Jordan.

As far as awards go in the NBA, MVP is one of the most remarkable and significant. Both Michael Jordan and Lebron James are definitely not strangers to the award. However, Jordan won 5 MVPs during his 15 years of play, while James has won 4 in his 20 years of play. For the greats of the game, awards are an easily justifiable way to prove their dominance during their careers and compare their resumes. In fewer seasons, Jordan was considered the MVP of the league more times than Lebron has been, simply because his level of play was consistently incomparable to any other players in the league, something Lebron simply cannot say about his career, having someone like Stephen Curry win 4 NBA championships in what is supposed to be Lebrons “era of basketball”.

Overall, Michael Jordan's career, resume, statistics, and skills overwhelm what James has built during his time in the NBA. They are both undoubtedly the two best players to ever touch a basketball, but the facts just do not stack up for Lebron in the same way they do for Jordan. Outside of Jordan and Lebron, there are many remarkable NBA players. Who else do you think could be involved in the G.O.A.T. conversation?

  2. I definitely agree. Lebron and Jordan are both influential innovators of basketball. Lebron has many outstanding accomplishments. However, compared to Jordan there is no challenge in choosing who is the best. Jordan is unsurpassed and his prime is inimitable.

  3. By seeing the statistics, it easy to say that Michael Jordan was the best NBA player of all time. However, it is also important to realize what the two players were working with. Maybe Jordan had easier opponents or a better team than Lebron James has. As mentioned, James has to compete with Steph Curry while Jordan did not have any huge rivals. Personally, since I started watching basketball Trae Young has been my favorite player but that is not based on his statistics and he would not be a G.O.A.T.

  4. While you bring up many valid points for why Lebron should be considered to be the greatest basketball all time, if you’re asking me my personal recommendation for the G.O.A.T. would have to be Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, not just for his stats but because of his actions off the court. Even during his playing days, Kareem was known for his activism. He participated in protests, advocated for racial equality, and famously boycotted the 1968 Olympics to protest racial inequality in the U.S..
