Meital Pavolotzky, Week 1: Life can Start with our Phones

“Kids spend too much time on their phones”. This is a phrase that we have all definitely heard and have our own opinions on. I think that it is true, we do spend a lot of time just looking down at our screens which leads us to start living our lives through them. Lately, I’ve noticed this because after spending two months of my summer without my phone, I realized how big of an impact technology has on us. However, I do not believe that it is something that should be held against us or be considered a flaw of our generation. I believe that we, instead, should use technology to open our eyes to the physical world. What I mean by this is that seeing something on our phones can help us appreciate the real world. An example of this is a group chat that I have with my friends called Patch. Rather than texting on the group chat, we only send photos of patches of sky that we think are pretty. Having this has made me start to appreciate nature even more than before. Not only am I able to value all the pictures but I have also started looking out for more patches. In response to this, I now see beautiful patches of sky every time I look outside. In summary, I believe that our phones can actually be a powerful tool that can open our eyes to the world around us. What we need is not to completely quit technology. In contrast, we should start using screens to our advantage and improve our quality of life.

What are some ways that you can start admiring the physical world through your phone?

  1. One example of a way that my phone helps me admire the physical world is through adds of food. Watching a well thought out add that is specifically created to make you crave a certain food is so powerful since it demonstrates how strong of a connection we have with the content that we view online.

  2. I completely agree, while phone are very addicting and have many negatives to them, it also provides a lot of positives and oppurtiniontes for different perspectives of things around us. I admire the physical world through my phone by taking photos and editing them and sending them to friends. Plus, I also think its useful using the phone for things we enjoy and using it as a resource to learn more quicker and more conveniently.

  3. This is a great way to acknowledge the excessive use of technology but also appreciate the elements that it brings. I relate to this because I use my phone throughout the day a lot during times when I don't need to. Excessive use of technology can become a bad habit when you use it subconsciously; however, there are still many benefits. I can check my phone and stay updated with my family and friends.

  4. I don’t really agree with the overall message of this. In my opinion, I use my phone too much for useless activities, such as an over usage of social media. In my experience, when I have taken breaks from my phone, it has increases my attention span by removing a major distraction for me, overall improving my happiness, and my willingness to connect with others and learn more about the world around me.
