Jonas’s Pre-Week 1 NFL Blog: Why the Packers will Shock the Leauge 9/5/23
Week one of the NFL season is certainly one of the most exciting moments on the sports calendar. For many teams, it is a chance to start the season off with a bang. For others, it's the beginning of a long path toward the number one pick in the draft. For many, it’s a game full of question marks and uncertainty, and this is especially true of the 2023-2024 Green Bay Packers.
Almost everything about the Packers team entering the NFL season is unknown. Most obvious of all is Jordan Love taking the reigns of the team. Leaguewide, Love’s ability to play at the NFL level is criticized, both by fans and the media. People often point out his lack of experience as a key reason he will be unsuccessful. However, they fail to understand that this lack of experience is because the Packers decided to develop him for 3 years under quarterback Aaron Rodgers, hoping that he could absorb as much valuable information and lessons about the game as he could from the 39-year-old veteran. Although he has not played much in his career yet, this method has worked well in the past for other teams. One example of this is Patrick Mahomes, who sat as the QB2 in Kansas City behind Alex Smith for the first year of his career, and then immediately took the league by storm when he was given an opportunity, winning his first MVP award, offensive player of the year, and being named AP first-team all-pro. If Mahomes and many other talented players can follow this method and have it work for them, why can’t Love?
The Packers wide receiver group has also been scrutinized league-wide due to their youth. It features 2nd year players Christain Watson and Romeo Doubs, and rookie Jayden Reed. Usually, youth in the NFL comes with inexperience; generally, inexperienced teams tend to struggle throughout the season. The Packers' youth is an important weapon because it provides them with something they have lacked for years: speed. Their newfound swiftness will force teams who have faced the Packers in years prior to adjust to a completely different set of possibilities for the Packers offense. Teams will be ill-prepared for the new strategies on offense because of how incredibly different they will be from the past. Additionally, speed and athleticism of young players come with a versatile possibility for game plans the coaches make. It opens up the run game through potential jet sweeps and screens to speedy receivers and allows Jordan Love to showcase his talent by slinging the ball to receivers who are 40+ yards downfield with their ability to burn through opposing defenses.
Overall, this year's Packers team is being questioned because of their youth. Clearly, though, their youth could end up being one of their greatest tools, rather than hurting them. This season, Jordan Love will prove himself as a top NFL QB, and the Packers' offense will thrive with Christain Watson catching passes.
