Stirring Up Skills: Why Every Parent Should Let Their Kids Experiment in the Kitchen

While cooking may not seem important to teens or anyone, it helps develop skills you use in your everyday life. First, let's start off with the patience cooking teaches you. When cooking, oftentimes, you will have to wait for things to be done for hours; learning patience in a low-stress environment such as a kitchen can help build the foundational skills to have patience in real life. Cooking is also a vital skill to have when you move away from home. Oftentimes, when people move away for college, they don't know how to cook, leading them to eat fast food and pack on the pounds. While someone who learned to cook as a child is way less likely to do so. Cooking also allows you to have an outlet for creativity and experimentation; cooking leads you to learn how to combine flavors, textures, and ingredients in new ways. It also allows for problem-solving. Let's say you're cooking a tomato sauce and add too much salt. Now what? Just like in life, cooking will enable you to learn problem-solving skills necessary not just when cooking in the future but for interactions with others. Finally, cooking gives you a sense of confidence. If you learn to cook, even just the basics, you will be more equipped than almost half of the world. The confidence to know that no matter where you are should give you a sense of pride; at least, it does for me. So what do you think, should kids be allowed to cook?

  1. I think that kids should definitely be allowed to cook. As someone who cooks on a daily basis, I can list many other life skills that working in the kitchen has given me. I have learned how to manage my time better and I can also appreciate the work others do when cooking. I believe that everyone should have a basis of cooking because cooking is a really helpful life skill since it not only makes your daily meals cheaper but you also eat healthier and tastier meals that fit your needs.

  2. I totally agree with you! You make many good points throughout this blog post, especially with the point on how cooking can be a creative outlet. Sometimes when my sister doesn't feel like drawing a picture, she will cook something for our family and, with all the hard work she put in to get to today, it turns out to be a win for everyone. My sister, because she gets to use cooking as a creative outlet, and the rest of our family, because we get delicious food. Cooking also brought me and my sister closer, so I definitely think that kids should learn how to cook from a young age.

  3. I agree that kids should be aloud to cook although I would recommend that they do so under adult supervision. Patients is a skill that a large portion of the population is lacking in and so using cooking as a way to teach it is a wonderful concept. It can also give a child a sense of independence that will carry through their transition into an adult. Cooking is also much cheaper alternative than going out or ordering food. This could be especially useful if their parents have to work long hours and don't have time to cook a whole meal.
