Ayden Kryshka Week 7: Halloween: Should people of all ages be allowed to Trick or Treat?

Now this is a question that has been debated for well, as long as I've been around. Some citys such as Jacksonville, Illinois and Rayne, Louisiana both prevent kids older than 13 from trick-or treating. Now some view this policy as protective, thinking that it is a way to keep communities safer, and the holiday more innocent. But I don't agree with this, teens are kids too and should be treated as such, I am15 turning 16 in December and I still trick or treat and plan on doing so until I go to college at a minimum. Trick or treating is a time to gather with friends, watch scary movies, and express yourself without fear of societal repercussions. Its a time for people to be themselves, something that everyone of all ages has some need to do. All around the country people are feeling shamed for trick or treating if they're a teenager, and I don't believe that's right. Some parents keep their teens home in order to keep them from doing mischievous things such as drinking, partying, or things parents wouldn't approve of. While this may be the case for some teens the majority just want a time to freely express their creativity and enjoy some free time from friends. So, whether its parents rules, or the nosy neighbors trying to stop those pesky kids from keeping them up past 9:00, I believe that teens around the world should be able to trick or treat no matter the age.

  1. I found this very interesting and think this is definitely a good question to ask. Although, I fully believe all ages should be able to trick or treat as it's a time to have fun and express yourself and be with your friends. Even so, you should make sure all the young kids get priority to get candy and enjoy the spirit like you did when you were younger.

  2. I didn't know that states prevented teens from trick or treating. I agree with you that this is wrong since teens are probably the people most in need of a day to loosen up. I think that halloween is very freeing for most people since you get to be someone other than yourself for an afternoon. Also, the idea that teens shouldn't go trick or treating because it could be harmful for them is odd since it incentivises them to go to a party instead.

  3. This blog is very intriguing to me. I fully agree that nobody should feel shame for trick or treating beyond what many would view as an acceptable age. However, at a certain point, to me at least, it becomes a tradition of childhood and is something that everyone should mature out of at some point in time.

  4. I didn't think people took trick-or-treating this seriously to the point of making laws about it. I agree that everyone should be able to trick-or-treat no matter their age. It's fun as long as you have friends and I don't think age should have any factor in whether you're allowed to go or not.

  5. Trick or Treating, to me, is something that is fun and something that I want to do. I love going outside and seeing everyone walking around the streets dressed up. I understand that many teenagers can cause chaos but most teenagers just do it for the fun and candy. I do not think that there should be laws against teenagers trick or treating and instead it should be up to the teenager to decide whether they have outgrown it or they still enjoy it.
