Eva Iofe Week 5: Digital vs. Traditional Art

Art can, and is by many, be considered a form of self-expression. There are many styles of art, ranging from pencil sketching to oil painting to graphic design tees or even making video games! However, there are a couple of ways to create those; digitally or traditionally (though some people combine the two).

Digital art is usually used to create graphic designs and animations. Utilizing resources like paid painting apps like Procreate (drawing and animation) or free ones like Flipaclip (animation), one can use their features to assist in creating art regardless of their skill level. Digital art also provides a much bigger variety of what someone can create because of access to the internet, a feature that traditional art does not have. On the other hand, while digital art is a cool medium, it is all on a screen, and though people can print art nowadays, there is something special about creating art on a canvas or sculpting a figure out of clay. Many mediums are encompassed in digital and traditional art, but it is hard to get a certain texture or evoke certain emotions (especially for certain contemporary artworks) on a piece of printed paper; all there is is an illusion. Traditional art has also been the default for many, many centuries, considering that digital art is rather new, brought about with the emergence of modern technology like the camera, computer, or the iPad.

However, some people like to mix the two. In the years 2016 to 2019, Sun Yuan and Peng Yu created a robot scooping up ink, but it would never be able to fully clean the cage that it was placed in as the ink kept slipping out of its grasp. They (Sun Yuan and Peng Yu) called their piece: Can't Help Myself. Can't Help Myself could be an example of combining the two, as a machine would be needed to control the robot. Another example is 3D Printing, where a digital design becomes physical.

What is your preferred way of creating art? (p.s., things like dance and theater are also examples of traditional art!)

Comments

  1. I personally prefer traditional art because it feels like the thing that I make is my emotions in physical form. Every stroke was made from some kind of feeling that was channeled through my own hand. Where as, something that I digitally make almost feels like a fake replica that doesn't feel as personal. Also you can undo any mistake that you make in digital art which will leave you with a completely different result than if you work around or incorporate some of the mistakes that you have made into your art.

  2. I prefer to make art in the physical, more traditional form because I feel more involved in it and the creative process when I do so. Making art for me is a process I like to feel immersed in when I take it upon myself. To me, traditional art making feels more special than the more modern, alternative options.
