Jason Lewin Week 3: The License!
I had been looking forward to this milestone for years. I would now be free and have all the independence I had ever wanted. I could get in a car..........alone, blast my music and drive wherever and to whomever I wanted to. I was so excited for this day, I even had a countdown on my phone with the days, hours, and minutes. I got my learner's permit on September 20th of 2022, so this meant I could get my drivers license on September 20th of 2023. I was more excited to get my license this year than for my actual 16th birthday.
Originally, it was very weird to me that in Florida you needed to have a learners permit for a full year while in California, you are only required to have one for 6 months, despite it being much easier to drive in Boca Raton than in Los Angeles. In Boca Raton, the roads are much wider with less turns and less of a need to go on highways. In Los Angeles, driving is much more complicated since the roads are short and packed, and driving on the freeway is basically essential in order to get anywhere.
Now back to the point, I had counted every second I was in the car up until the second I passed my drivers test. I drove approximately 70 hours and 30 minutes. I drove everywhere with my parents; I drove to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, to my basketball tournaments, to school everyday, though the bustling streets of California, and even a 6 hour long drive to mammoth mountain. All of this driving was to prepare me for that moment when I got in the car alone. Fast forward to the day I got my license, I woke up and was filled with joy and excitement! Today was the day I would finally get my license.....well if I passed.....thankfully I did!
This is a great blog, and congratulations on receiving your license. I'm getting my driver's license on October 14th, and I'm very excited. I understand the happiness of finally having the freedom to drive by yourself, and it's a great milestone of independence.

ReplyDeleteI have not gotten my licence yet. I have a pretty late birthday, in May, but I got my permit as soon as I turned 15 and am planning to do the same thing with my license. I am very excited to get it because I want to be able to go wherever I want without needing to worry about transport and if my parents are free. I also found it interesting that in California you get it after 6 months since the same thing happens in Pennsylvania. I used to live in Pennsylvania and, there, you only got your permit when you were 16 but then you only waited half a year for your licence. This makes me wonder about the reasons behind the differences in the time to get you licence.
