Jonas Slusher Week 3 NBA Media Day Blog

NBA Media Day is well known, and covered thoroughly by the media. It serves as a way for teams to build hype around their upcoming seasons and to showcase new offseason acquisitions to the team. Overall, the day serves as a method for franchises to increase their income through jersey and ticket sales, and serves as a method for the fans to finally get a better look at what their team will be once the season begins.

One of the biggest storylines surrounding NBA media day was James Harden. Harden is one of the last players leftover on the trade block for the 2023 offseason, as players like Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal were both dealt to their own respective new teams in the previous months. Harden made his second trade request in two years; just before last season he was dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers from the Brooklyn Nets, and now is seeking a trade to a different contending team. There was much anticipation surrounding whether or not Harden would actually show up for the team’s media day, and as expected, he did not. The significance of this is that it reinforces Harden’s statements that he does not want to play for the 76ers under any circumstances, no matter what. It also brings opportunity to a team like the Miami Heat, who missed out on the Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal sweepstakes, and could be looking for another star to help them keep up in the Eastern Conference’s “arms race”, as the Bucks have added Lillard and the Celtics have added Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday through multiple trades.

Another large storyline, and major highlight from Media Day, was Damian Lillard arriving to be with the other members of the Milwaukee Bucks, and making his first public appearance in a Bucks uniform. Lillard, a seven time all star and rookie of the year with the Portland Trail Blazers, is undoubtedly one of the best Point Guards in basketball. The Bucks made a deal to cut off any potential he would go to the rival Heat or Raptors, and as a way to keep their own superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee for years to come.

Overall, Media Day is an exciting event that brings enthusiasm to fans worldwide. There are many major stories during the NBA’s Media Day that take place, but the James Harden saga has to be the most important of all. Harden is the final piece left to fall before the season begins in just a few weeks, and could add even more skill to an already talented team. What do you think is the biggest story surrounding NBA Media Day this year?

  1. I have always found media day very exciting because it is the beginning of the upcoming NBA season. I find it interesting how a single star player can completely shift the dynamic and ranking of a team. I am looking forward to seeing how this season unravels and how these big trades affect different teams progression throughout the season.
