Jonas's Week 4 Blog: FATD's Case for Album of the Year
On Friday, October 6th, 2023, famous Canadian rapper Drake dropped his 8th studio album, For All The Dogs. The album has been teased for months, and its release was greatly anticipated for millions of people around the world. Although many great albums have dropped this year, such as Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape, Travis Scott’s Utopia, and Gunna’s a Gift & a Curse, Drake’s makes a case to top them all.
The album’s feature list is full of superstars. Its most anticipated features were those from artists Yeat and J. Cole. Each of these artists have their own very unique styles. Yeat, for example, uses much more autotune, adlibs, and violent electronic beats; his music is less about the lyrics and more about what is built around them. J. Cole, on the other hand, has a more lyrical style. Cole’s lyrics are built to be the attractive part of his music for a listener. He often incorporates poetic schemes into his writing. The most important detail, for both of these two artists, and all others on the album, is that Drake was able to switch his style to match both. This action shows the versatility of Drake, one of the best parts of the album, and underappreciated part of his talent.
Statistically, For All The Dogs has an astounding resume that helps its case greatly. The album received 108.6 million streams globally on Spotify alone in its first day, and the album is projected to garner 400-450 thousand sales in its first week of existence. Additionally, the top 10 songs on the Genius Charts were all ones from FATD, and the album is projected to debut at #1 on the Billboard charts as well. Songs such as “First Person Shooter” and “IDGAF” are competing - really only with each other - for the top song on the charts as well. Overall, the album has been dominant statistically since its drop just a few days ago. For All The Dogs is one of the surefire best albums of the year. Although it has to compete with other incredible albums, it makes a very strong case both statistically and in each of its songs alone. The album highlights Drake and other artists best skills, and has definitely lived up to the Hype. For me, For All the Dogs is definitely one of the best albums Drake has dropped in recent years. What do you think is the best Album of 2023?
