Jonas's Week 6: The Dangers of AI Tech to the Music Industry
Artificial intelligence is a rapidly developing technology. It is supposed to be the next great invention in Humankind's history; it already is and will likely become even more revolutionary and impactful than it currently is. While all of this is true, if AI use in the Music Industry is not limited, it will be a great unprecedented disaster for all.
AI takes the creativity out of music. The ability to access AI allows artists in any genre to have programs write lyrics for them. A large part of the enjoyment of music for many people comes from the personality or the current emotion of an artist being instilled into their writing through meaningful lyrics. This entire portion of music would be affected greatly, because programs can churn out unoriginal lyrics now. Additionally, AI and robots can become adept at a task, but undoubtedly cannot replicate human emotion or the outside of the box thinking that the human mind is capable of. If AI is utilized to write lyrics or music, then songs as impactful as “Runaway” by Kanye West or “No Role Modelz” by J. Cole may never be made again because the mind and creativity of the artists will be slowly removed from the music making process.
AI capabilities could also take money away from artists themselves. Music leaks and other crimes already take hard-earned money from musicians, and AI is yet another threat. Already, AI is being used to develop systems which allow one to input words into programs which then make recordings that impersonate artists' voices; this includes even the most famous artists such as Drake and Taylor Swift. Everytime a song is made using these people’s identities without their permission, money generated is never seen by them even though the music was likely popularized using their name, image, and likeness. This could cause smaller artists to earn little money from the industry, and in turn not find music to be sustainable for their livelihood. Overall, AI takes money away from bigger artists and steals the potential of smaller artists away from listeners.
In conclusion, AI is likely to be a great drag on the music industry. It is probable that AI will take money and creativity out of the music industry and into the pockets of the wrong people, while at the same time removing much of the enjoyment from music for average listeners. There should be specific limits placed on AI use in music so that this can be avoided. What do you think? Is AI a complete negative for the music industry? Could there be some benefits to AI use in music as well?
Wow, this was an informative read! I agree with your take on how AI can take the creativity out of the music industry; having a robot write lyrics can make songs inauthentic. I believe that while it could be helpful to use AI for smaller things like getting inspiration or feedback on lyrics, but overall, I do not think that AI should be used as often as it is today, in the musical or any other artistic field.
ReplyDeleteI think AI has affected people in many different fields of art and is making it more difficult for small artists to get popularized. There may be some benefits to AI in the music industry, but overall it can be quite damaging to music artists and I think the negatives out-weigh the positives.
ReplyDeleteI believe that, depending on the use, AI could actually benefit the music industry if used correctly. If it was simply used in replacement of artists, writing songs without emotion and taking the jobs of singers and songwriters, it would obviously be a negatived. However, it could also be used to help. If used to assist in mixing audio, expanding certain pre-written lyrics, and other things like that, I believe it could benefit the music industry as well. It all depends on how it's used.
ReplyDeleteWhile yes AI is detrimental to the ability for small and big artists to make money if their likenesses are stolen, I don't think that it would be that bad for the listeners. If the artists using AI don't make music that resinates with its listeners than people won't listen to it. Meaning that people would continue listening to the music produced by human artists, and they would still control the music industry. However, if the AI music is better than listeners would gravitate towards it leading to happy listeners and less wealthy musicians.
ReplyDeleteI think there are definetley pros and cons to using ai in the music industry. It can be helpfull to artists in many different ways, along with this there is benefits for consumers aswell, for example spotifys DJ which is an ai.
