Meital Pavolotzky, Week 3: Should Students Wear School Uniforms?
In many schools, school uniforms are required. However, there are also schools that do not even have a dress code. So, the inevitable question comes up: to what extent should schools control what students are allowed to wear?
Personally, and I think many would agree, school uniforms are not comfortable or enjoyable to wear. Not only can they be itchy but they also do not look good. After all, everyone has different bodies and it is impossible for one outfit to fit everyone perfectly. As well, the mentality of students can be affected by school uniforms. Students may feel that they are not able to be themselves. This would disrupt their creative processes which are very important for the students since they need to learn about themselves. Also, the uniform could make the students feel like they are being completely controlled by the school since they do not even choose their own clothes. Additionally, it could make the students feel insecure or confused since the uniforms add more rules that they need to follow. Lastly, uniforms would be a financial burden on the parents since uniforms tend to be costly compared to many other clothes that students could wear.
On the other hand, uniforms can be a great way for a school to be better. Having uniforms would mean that no inappropriate clothes could be worn in school. As well, it would unify all the students and create a better sense of community. Having uniforms could even lead to less bullying and less hatred between the students since there would be no way for the students to judge each other’s clothing. If everyone wears the same thing, no students would be judged for having clothes that are either out of style or different. Furthermore, the school could show school spirit with the colors of their uniforms.
I believe that school uniforms should only be enforced on elementary school students. Preschool students are too young and should have the liberty to play in comfortable clothes. Middle school students are maturing and need to feel good about themselves and the clothes that they wear. High school students have already developed a sense of style and should be allowed to express it. Elementary school students, on the other hand, are still growing and need to learn acceptance based on personality and not looks which is something that uniforms can help with.
What has been your experience with school uniforms and which age should you have to wear them?
