Meital Pavolotzky, Week 5: Preserve Movie Theaters

When was the last time you went to a movie theater? When was the last time that you streamed a movie? If you are being completely honest, you probably streamed many movies between now and the last time you went to a movie theater. You are not alone. In fact, some say that movie theater attendance has decreased by 50% in the last four years. If you think about this, it is a crazy number that has put a huge toll on movie theaters and its business. So the question arises, should we try to preserve movie theaters or should they die out? I believe that we should continue supporting movie theaters.

Going to the movies is a great experience. You walk in and the smell of popcorn hits your face. You get your tickets and snacks and then you go into the theater. You sit down and relax as the commercials start. You can go with friends and make it into a fun hang out or you can go by yourself and connect with everyone else. While you watch the movie, everyone in the theater is feeling the same emotions and everyone laughs at the same time, something that just does not happen at your TV.

The screen in movie theaters is much bigger and the speakers are a lot louder. This enforces the impact that the movie has on you. As well, going to a theater is something that you have to plan instead of something you do because there is nothing else to do. This makes going to see a movie a fun and productive idea.

However, movie theaters are not perfect. They are pricey and you have to pay each time you go. As well, if you get snacks those add an additional cost which is much more expensive than snacks at home. Adding on, you are not able to pause the movie which can be a pain if you want a snack refill or to go to the restroom. Nonetheless, I believe that movie theaters are way better than streaming movies and that we should preserve them.

What do you think is the best way for movie theaters to keep being open while competing with streaming services?

  1. I do agree with you that movie theatres aren’t perfect, but I love the movies nonetheless. As for how to keep them open, the big loss in the industry is pirating. With people pirating more movies, movie theatres are making less. So its not a problem with streaming services but with people pirating movies.

  2. I agree that going to the movies can be a hassle and costly; however, going to the movies can enhance the overall experience. Movie theaters have intentionally created an immersive and wonderful experience with their use of surround sound and giant screens. Plus laughing at a funny moment with everyone else in the theater is such a heartwarming sentiment.

  3. I love going to the movies because the loud speakers and big screen give a more immersive experience compared to watching a movie at home. I think movie theaters could increase security in order to decrease the amount of people illegally filming newly released movies in order to bring more people to the theater. Also, movie theaters could make the seats more comfortable and the option to bring your own snacks.

  4. I love going to the movies. I think the best way to preserve movie theathers both in America and Worldwide is by finding a way to cut prices so that people are more encouraged to go to the movies. A major part of the problem is simply the fact that people have to leave the comfort of their homes in order to physically be at a movie theater, so cutting costs could be an incentive for people to do so.
