Sarah Beinner - Week 3 - Should we not be testing on animals?

Recently, people have begun questioning whether or not we should be testing on animals. Personally, I don't think that it is unethical. This is because if we didn't test on animals first, we would start testing on humans much sooner in the process, and most people can agree that it is better for a mouse to get sick than a person to. Some people think that it is morally wrong to say that a human life is more valuable than a mouse. However, I disagree with these people because if you think about it, you wouldn't eat a person, but you would eat a cow. This is because we put ourselves above them and don't feel like we are cut from the same cloth as them. Therefore, if we can kill an animal for food so that people don't die from starvation, why can't we run tests on them to prevent human ailments?

However, it is accurate that most of the time, what is true for a mouse is not necessarily true for a human. For example, we have cured cancer in mice, but the cure doesn't translate to the human body. So yes, most of the time, experimentation on animals doesn't help us; however, I think that it is still warranted since it is still effective sometimes, and in my opinion, human life is more important than a mouse in almost every scenario.

Even if the testing is ineffective, I would like the piece of mind that the things that I am using or the vaccines that I am getting are not being tested on humans first. Plus, the more testing that something goes through and the more times that it comes back as effective or unharmful, the more reassured we can be.

Do you think that animal testing is ethical or do think that it is morally wrong to put another animal's life below our own?

  1. I think animal testing is one of the most horrible things you can do to an animal. It is cruel and unethical, i believe that anyone who tests on animals, at least in an unethical way, should be punished to the full extent of the law.
