Was Palestine Ever a Nation? - Week 6
Was Palestine Ever a Nation?
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has existed for approximately 76 years. Pro-Palestinians claim that Palestine was a nation until it was wrongfully invaded by Israelis. There's a lot of misinformation regarding this foreign conflict that may distort someone's perception of what really is going on. To better understand the conflict, learning the history of Israel and Palestine is crucial. In 930 BC, the kingdom of Judah was established. Judah was a part of the twelve tribes of Israel and was home to the Jewish people. During this time, there was no "Palestine". This was a Semitic land with primarily ancient Jewish people. Palestine is a derived term from the Philistines, who were the Aegean people, not Palestinians, because frankly, there is no such thing as a Palestinian people. This is a common misinterpretation because it has never been recorded that Palestine was ever a nation in all of history. Nevertheless, the Aegean people settled along the Mediterranean. After defeating the last Jewish revolt, the Romans named the land of Judea "Palaestina" to remove and minimize Jewish identification with Israel. Since the very beginning of time, Israel and its descendants have been invaded, colonized, and destroyed, and they are now accused of doing the very same. Even after the beginning of exile, Jewish populations still existed in regions of Jerusalem and the Tiberias. Jews have always had historical ties to the land of Israel, even after the forced diaspora. Palestine is not a separate nation or individual identity. According to www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org, "The representative of the Arab Higher Committee to the United Nations submitted a statement to the General Assembly in May 1947 that said "Palestine was part of the Province of Syria" and that, "politically, the Arabs of Palestine were not independent in the sense of forming a separate political entity." Palestine was never an individual nation; in relation to that, could you name a Palestinian historical figure, system of currency, or any history from before 1920? Palestine was authorized by Britain during the League of Nations, not by Palestine. Before 1920, it was a part of the Ottoman Empire, not Palestine. Palestine was never an established state; this is not a matter of which side you support; this is a fact. How could a non-existent land that has never been recorded as a nation in history be invaded? Propaganda and misinformation easily influence many ignorant people, but the truth that some people refuse to educate themselves about or just simply refuse to accept is that Palestine was never a nation and was simply a group of displaced Arabs.
