Zander 5: Why Do We Care About Remakes?

A pattern I’ve begun to notice recently is that many of the most popular video games and movies often tend to be remakes of old pieces of media. While the most obvious examples of this would be the remakes of old Disney movies that have been released over the past several years, there are many more examples of this. For example, one of the most popular games this year was the remake of Resident Evil 4, and one of the most anticipated upcoming releases is the remake of Persona 3. So why is this, and what is the interest of playing a game you’ve already played, or watching a movie you’ve already seen?

Well, firstly, there’s the appeal to those who never played or watched the previous piece of media. The appeal to this group is obvious, as to them, it’s new content. Even if one already knows the plot and twists of a story, experiencing it first hand can still be entertaining. Even if  you’re already familiar with a piece of media, viewing or playing it’s remake doesn’t completely negate the fun you can have with it.

However, what about the other group who has already experienced it? Well, there are several reasons. Firstly, nostalgia. Getting to experience a piece of your past for a second time in a remastered form can often be a very pleasant experience. Secondly, if you are a fan of the original work, watching a remake can be enjoyable as you would still be getting new content, albeit less than you would from simply an entirely new installment. Lastly, it has the chance of introducing new fans to the property. A remake could expand a piece of media to a wider audience and thus further it’s success, ensuring more of it in the future.

There are several more reasons as to why one could be excited for a remake or remaster, but those are the ones I found to be the most common. There is no doubt that remakes are often very successful, but the discussion of whether or not they should be is another debate as a whole. The debate surrounding remasters of old media is one that is incredibly long and complex, and one that I may discuss another day.

Are you looking forward to any upcoming remakes? Is there any piece of media you think deserves to be remade?

  1. This is a great blog! I also like remakes and think they're a fun way to carry on a certain part of media. I'm looking foward to "Scream 6" I like really liked the past "Scream" movies and I'm excited to see the sequel to the previous one.

  2. I enjoy remakes, but only the ones that are clearly not just made for the idea of making money and are actually given time and effort in the process of making them. I am looking forward to a potential Office remake in the coming years, as it was recently announced.

  3. What an interesting topic! I have heard a lot of discourse over remakes in the past, but I personally am excited to watch the remake of the anime Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun's first season. I do think that the Mulan live-action should be remade, even if the only (yet arguably the most important) change is that the producers add Mushu.
