Ayden Kryshka Week 9: Nightmare before Christmas a Halloween or Christmas movie

'Tis the season for the debate on which holiday the Nightmare Before Christmas truly belongs to, Ol Hallows Eve, or Christmas. While some argue for The Nightmare Before Christmas to fall into the Christmas movie category, I am a staunch advocate for the opposite. I firmly believe that Tim Burton's classic tale is a Halloween movie, so let us delve into why without further ado.

The aesthetic: There's no denying the movie's spooky resemblance to Halloween. The landscape occupied by ghosts, ghouls, and goblins pays a great homage to the Halloween spirit and design. The dark and gothic tones of the animation style and the town's buildings pay homage to the style that we typically think of as that of Halloween, in a way no Christmas movie ever could.

The Pumpkin Kings Quest: At the core of the movie sits the Pumpkin Kings Quest, which sends Jack Skellington on a misguided journey to take over Christmas. However, Jack's fascination with Christmas seems to stem from a desire for something new and exciting, these curious and mischievous attributes lending the movie more to Halloween's spirit rather than Christmas's giving nature. His lack of understanding of the joyous nature of the Christmas holiday and his attempts to integrate elements of Halloween into the holiday only reinforce its status as a Halloween movie.

The Spooky Ooky Soundtrack: The soundtrack for this movie is made up of songs such as "This is Halloween" and "Oogie Boogie's Song." the creepy cacophony known as the nightmare before Christmas soundtrack set the macabre soundtrack for this Halloween masterpiece. The songs, filled with wicked clever rhymes (see what I did there) and dark melodies, set the tone for Jack's Halloween adventure.

So, what is The Nightmare Before Christmas, a
Christmas or Halloween movie?

  1. I agree with you that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween movie; however, I wasn't aware that this is still being debated considering multiple cast members have said it was a Halloween movie along with the director, Henry Selick, who confirmed at a film festival in 2015 that it's a Halloween movie.

  2. I completely agree with you that this is a Halloween movie and I had no idea it was even in the debate to be a Christmas movie. I thought this was a very well written blog and I really like how you chose to format the different parts.
