Eva Iofe: Week 8 - Dancing with Fire
Most people have heard of the art of dance, and, as is the case of most demanding physical activities, dance has its fair share of dangers too. Ranging from lower back injuries to sprains or fractures in their feet, dancers have a lot to watch out for.
However, there are some forms of dance that could be seen as more dangerous than others. For example, fire dancing. Precisely what this style of dance's name sounds like, fire dancing is just another way of expressing oneself through dance, just with fire.
However, there are some forms of dance that could be seen as more dangerous than others. For example, fire dancing. Precisely what this style of dance's name sounds like, fire dancing is just another way of expressing oneself through dance, just with fire.
A style that goes back many centuries, stretching back to even the celebrations in the Second Jewish Temple, fire dancing has continued to stay relevant to many people throughout history. However, if dancing with fire is so dangerous, why do people still perform with hot flames? Well, fire dancing can carry much cultural significance, though people also dance with fire for entertainment purposes (think: circuses). Fire dancing is usually seen as a mysterious and dangerous art (which it is), but for a dangerous art form that lasted this long, there have to be safety measures put into place against accidents, right?
Naturally, it is advised for dancers to practice first, as well as having an aide who knows first aid on hand, but what I really appreciate about the guidelines that performers have reached a consensus on is testing materials (like the clothes the performer is going to wear) beforehand, just to make sure they don't catch on fire in front of their audience and, you know, burn to death.
Would you ever use fire in a dance?
I think that fire dancing is really interesting as the idea of it sounds absurd. I would imagine that it causes a lot injuries, especially while trying to learn the art, so I don't really understand why anyone would aspire to fire dance. I guess if it was a large part of your culture you would want to take part, however, I don't think that the average person would enjoy swinging fire around themselves.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this blog I am very interested in fire dancing and would love to see a performance. I think that as long as the performers are trained and there are safety precaution set in place, there are no reasons to not dance with fire. Obviously, precautions need to be set and I think that defining what clothes are desirable for the dancers is a great way to practice safety while doing this amazing type of dance.
