Eva Iofe, Week 9: The Wonders of Male Seahorses

We all know that male seahorses carry the babies for the females, eventually giving birth after the eggs have been fertilized. But what most people probably don't know are the processes that go into the way seahorses give birth.

Truly a wonderful natural phenomenon, seahorses are majestic creatures, who unfortunately can also be labeled as deadbeat parents. They have a 'survival of the fittest' mindset for all of their offspring, essentially shooting them out into the wild to fend for themselves. How have seahorses not gone extinct yet, you may ask? Well, that is where nature starts to lay its part. Seahorses are one of the pieces where the male gives birth, but that is not to be confused with the fact that male seahorses get pregnant. they don't/  It's actually the female that, once with the egg, transfers them over to her current male partner for fertilization, before going off to find another mate to further their species' population. Honestly, good for her. Unfortunately, that means that the male seahorses are now in charge of carrying a litter of up to one thousand offspring, as well as delivering their children into the natural world.

Male seahorses give birth in a way that is eerily similar to female mammals; they can control whether they open their pouch to get the babies in and out of them, as well as to fill it with water for their special courtship dances.

What are your opinions on how seahorses give birth? Do you think that it is weird to have the male animal carry the babies, as opposed to the mammalian way of female animals giving birth?

  1. I think this article is fascinating and the way seahorses give birth is interesting. This made me think whether or not the social dynamics and gender roles in seahorses is different than that of most animals since the males have to carry the babies.

  2. Wow! I learned so much about male seahorses. They are such fascinating creatures. As for the opinion I have about them I think its pretty cool. I don't think its weird as there are reasons for everything, even for male seahorses carrying the babies. If anything, it shows how cool nature can be.
