Sarah - Week 9 - What is better the city or suburb?

In my lifetime, I have lived in both a city and in the suburbs. I grew up in Manhattan and moved to Florida in 8th grade. I loved city life. I would walk to school every day since it was just seven blocks away. I also never needed to worry about getting my parents to drive me anywhere because if there was anywhere I wanted to go out of walking distance, I could get a cab. This gave me a lot more freedom; however, one could argue that once you learn to drive yourself, that wouldn't be an issue anymore, but it is still not ideal since driving anywhere in Florida takes at least 15 minutes. In addition, even though the strip malls in Florida are nice, I loved walking around the city with friends and finding the best little cafes and shops.

My memories of living in New York are great for the most part, but things have really gone downhill in the last couple of years since the pandemic. Now, you can walk into any store and steal just about whatever you want since they don't have the capacity to detain everyone, and people know it. Therefore, many stores have been forced to shut down, which has turned the city into a hollowed-out version of its former self. However, in South Florida, a lot of development has happened in the last couple of years due to its rapidly growing population. One notable development is the Bright Line. The Bright Line is a much cleaner, more eco-friendly railroad system compared to the subway, and it can transport you to the most common destinations in Florida, such as Miami and Orlando, along with many others.

New York is known for its large homeless population. There is this one homeless lady who is usually a few blocks away from my apartment, and she is known as the spitter. During the lockdown in 2020, she spat in a few people's faces, which just goes to show that you can find a lot of crazy people in the city, even the parts that aren't as densely packed with homeless people. Life in Florida is so much calmer and slower than the city that never sleeps. This in turn means that people are generally a lot less rude which can potentially lead to a happier lifestyle.

Would you rather live in a city or suburb and why?

Comments

  1. For my whole life, I have lived in a suburb. Personally, I find this very peaceful and I love being able to go outside on runs and walks without having to worry about traffic or having too many people on the sidewalks. Nonetheless, I have always wondered what it would be like to live in a city. Whenever I visit big cities like New York or Buenos Aires I love being able to walk anywhere I want, having all the public transport, and plainly having the city view and seeing all the busy streets. However, at the end of the day, I feel that living in a suburb is better for me and that I would probably get tired of living in a city.
